MARQUETTE---The Marquette boys varsity soccer team hosted Traverse City West on Saturday, August 20 at the Kaufman sports complex. The Redmen defense was under heavy pressure from the get go. TC put 14 shots on sophomore keeper Edan Hautamaki with 4 finding the back of the net and a 4-0 halftime lead.

“Traverse City West is good and we knew that so I challenged the boys to not give up in the second half.” - coach Dan Salmon said.

While TC continued an onslaught of shots in the second half, Marquette held them to no more goals. Hautamaki saw 13 shots in half 2 with the game ending 4-0 for TC.

“I felt we played better in the second but it was a great learning experience for our young team," Salmon said.

Marquette is 2-2 on the year and host Boyne City on Tuesday at 5pm.

FRIDAY'S MATCH RECAP

PETOSKEY---
The Marquette Redman boys varsity soccer team traveled to Petoskey on Friday, August 19 for a round robin tournament. Marquette finished the day with two wins and one loss with one game canceled due to lightning.

In game one versus Petoskey, Marquette struggled to find their footing and suffered a 3-0 loss. Petoskey scored in the first half on the Marquette keeper sophomore Edan Hautamaki who faced 4 shots. Hautamaki left the game in the second half with an injury and senior Isaac Johnson tended net allowing two goals on four shots. The final goal being a penalty kick for Petoskey.

“For our first game of the season I thought we played alright. It took some time to adjust to the turf and the fast play but we managed.” - Coach Dan Salmon

In game two, Marquette faced Marshall. Senior Max Dawson got the goal scoring started with an assist going to senior Ezra Pickard. That combo struck again before the half for the 2 to 0 lead. Marshall scored in the second half cutting the lead to one before Dawson and Pickard again hooked up for the third time with a final score of 3 to 1. Sophomore keeper Hautamaki faced two shots in the first half and four shots in the second half.

“Hunter Sandstrom and Indigo Catalano played some phenomenal defense in this game. Max and Ezra we’re unstoppable on the offensive side. They actually had a goal called off because of offsides as well.” - Coach Dan Salmon

In the final game of the day, Marquette faced off against Lake Orion. Dawson again started the scoring with a penalty kick in the first two minutes of the game. Just one minute after that, Dawson scored another goal from senior Isaac Johnson for 2-0 lead. Lake Orion then went on a scoring run putting in three unanswered goals for a 3 to 2 halftime lead. In the second half, Dawson and Pickard hooked up again to tie the game at 3. With eight minutes to go in the game, Dawson scored his fourth goal of the game with an assist from sophomore Kaleb Chipelewski. Keeper Hautamaki first six shots in each half. Marquette won 4-3.

“Max Dawson put an explanation point on the day with four goals in this game. We leaned on him heavy and he came through.” - Coach Dan Salmon
