Marquette Rallies Past Kingsford For Soccer Win
MARQUETTE---The Marquette Redmen boys varsity soccer team hosted the Kingsford Flivvers at the Kaufman sports complex on Tuesday night and came away with a 2-1 win.
Kingsford opened the game with all the momentum and gained a penalty kick goal early in the first half. The 1-0 score held until halftime.
At the 10 minute mark of the second half, Marquette sophomore Noah Bell headed in a corner kick from senior Ezra Pickard to tie the game 1-1. Near the 20 minute mark of the second half, Senior Max Dawson converted a penalty kick to take the 2-1 lead which was the game winner. Sophomore keeper Edan Hautamaki faced 10 shots in net with senior Isaac Johnson tending net for a few minutes while Hautamaki was injured.
“Kingsford showed up ready to play. They took control of the game right from the start and held the momentum most of the first half. I think our boys were a bit surprised at the intensity Kingsford came with. At halftime we settled them down and got back to our game plan and things went our way in the second half. Our outside defender Leo Vartainenen made a great goal line save after our keeper made a diving save but couldn't get to the rebound. That was probably the play of the game.” - coach Dan Salmon
Marquette will host Sault Ste. Marie on Thursday at 5:00 at Kaufman sports complex. They are 8-2-1 on the season.
