Delta County Wrestlers Advance To Regional Events
Thirteen high school wrestlers from Delta County have qualified for the individual regional tournaments after placing in the top four in their respective weight classes at district tournaments on Saturday. Eight Gladstone boys qualified at the districts in downstate Grayling, three Bark River-Harris wrestlers qualified at the tournament in Munising, and two Escanaba Eskymos advanced with yop-four finishes at the districts in downstate Gaylord. DIVISION TWO Escanaba's Hunter Larson qualified at 130 pounds, finishing second. Larson lost to Andy Runstorfer of Flint-Kearsley on a pin at 1:30 in the championship. Earlier, he beat Cameren Hawkins of Bay City Central, 4-2, and Chase Beecher of Clio on a major decision, 10-2. At 145 pounds, Escanaba's Ean Bevins placed fourth. Bevins beat Britton Spencer of Owosso on a pin in 3:30, then he lost to AJ Moore of Clio, 2-1. Then Bevins pinned Spencer again, this time in 28 seconds. In the consolation round, Bevins beat Lucas Buerkel of Petoskey, 11-1, in major decision. Bevins then lost to Moore again in the third place match, this time on a pin in 1:45. The individual regionals are set for next Saturday in downstate Marysville. DIVISION THREE Gladstone followed up its district tournament win as a team by getting eight boys through as individuals. Among them were Austin Demeuse and Cole Hansen, who won district championships in their respective weight classes. At 130 pounds, Hansen, a freshman, defeated Brandon Russell of Remus-Chippewa Hills in the championshup match on a 10-3 decision. At 171 pounds, Demeuse, a senior, beat Eldon McCabe of Scottville-Mason County Central, also on a 10-3 decision. At 135 pounds, Gladstone sophomore Adam Bruce advanced to the championship match before losing a touch decision to Nolan Saxton of Remus-Chippewa Hills, 6-4. At 103 pounds, Braves freshman Lane Matzke made it to the district final before losing to Brent Steed of Kingsley on a major decision, 12-1. At 119 pounds, Braves sophomore Vadym Torvinen won his third place match over Avery Carr of Scottville-Mason County Central, with a pin at one minute, 23 seconds. At 140 pounds, Braves sophomore Brody Sanville defeated Menominee senior Owen Weber in their third place match on a 9-0 major decision. Gladstone's Jared Demeuse (215 pounds) and Mason Frederick (285 pounds), both finished fourth in their weight classes. DIVISION FOUR Bark River-Harris's Tyler Labadie finished second, while Mason Ray and Adam Kleikamp both took fourth in their respective weight classes. At 125 pounds, Kleikamp lost his third place match to Austin Cook of Rogers City due to an injury. At 189 pounds, Labadie advanced to the championship match before he lost to Kevin Roberts of Gwinn on a 4-0 decision. And at 130 pounds, Ray lost to Logan Dekeyser of St. Ignace on an 8-2 decision.
