Braves Finish Fourth; Esky's Larson Wins 125 Title
GAYLORD---The Gladstone High School Wrestling team finished fourth out of 29 teams at the Northern Michigan Championships in Gaylord Saturday evening.
Three Gladstone wrestlers finished as runners-up in their weight classes, while Escanaba freshman Hunter Larson brought home a championship at 125 pounds.
For the Braves, the Demeuse brothers led the way.
Senior 171-pounder Austin Demeuse (pictured above) lost to Ridge Schutte of Whittemore-Prescott, 11-2, in the final. His younger brother, 189-pound junior Jared Demeuse, lost to Gabe Stern of Roscommon, in 3:27.
And at 119 pounds, Gladstone's Vadym Torvinen also made it to the final before losing on a Tech Fall to Derek Giallombardo of Grayling by an 18-3 score.
Other Gladstone wrestlers to make the podium included Lane Matzke (6th Place, 103 pounds), Nick Dawson (6th Place, 125 pounds), Cole Hansen (3rd Place, 130 Pounds), Doby Gillis (4th Place, 189 pounds), and Mason Frederick (4th Place, heavyweight).
For Escanaba, Larson continued his excellent season, with another trophy coming home. This time, the 125-pounder beat Max Halstead of Grayling, 4-0, in the final.
Four other Eskymos made the podium, including Justin Mathieson (8th Place, 112 pounds), Simon Chouinard (8th Place, 119 pounds), and Ean Bevins (6th place, 145 pounds), and Brandon Kangas (8th Place, 171 pounds).
One other Yooper, Beau Caster of Marquette, won a championship. He took first in the 160-pound weight class, pinning Andy Dault of Oscoda in the final.
