Bark River Launches New Legion Baseball Program

BARK RIVER---There's a new American Legion Baseball team in the area.

Bark River has a team for the first time, called the Buccaneers, or "Bucs" for short.

The Bark River boys lost to the Gladstone Junior Indians, 13-2, in six innings, Tuesday night, but are off to a 3-2 start in the first five games of their first Legion season.

"A lot of the kids wanted to go on and play Legion Ball, but we didn't have a team," Bark River Manager Matt Richer said. "They've been playing in Escanaba for years, but when you've got 10 or 12 kids who want to play, not all of them are gonna make the Escanaba (Cubs) team."

So, Richer and Bark River-Harris baseball coach Mark Heim worked to do something.

"We kind of got together as coaches, and with the high school coaches, and there's a lot of interest with that (BR-H) team starting a few years back," Richer said. "We got together to see how many kids we could get, and then got a few (business) sponsorships to get this ball rolling, and, you know, here we are!"

The players are happy to have a team to play on during the summer months.

"I think it helps the kids who don't get to play as much," said Bark River catcher/infielder Logan Heim, who also plays summer travel ball in Appleton. "They don't have the experience, so it helps them to learn the fundamentals that they haven't learned since playing in like ths sixth grade. So, I think that's good."

"It's fun to keep on playing after high school ball," said Bark River catcher/outfielder Kadin Mustafa, who played for the Escanaba Junior Cubs last summer. "Some new kids, some kids that I had on my old team. Just nice to have a summer program."
