Indians Earn Split; Advance To Tourney Semifinals
GLADSTONE---The Gladstone Indians American Legion baseball team won once and lost once on Saturday to finish 2-2 in the round-robin portion of the Gregg Johnson Memorial Tournament. The Indians beat the Kingsford Blues, 7-1, before losing to Midland Berryhill, 15-0, in a game that was called by the mercy rule in the sixth inning. Tyson Seymour pitched the entire opener for the Indians to earn the victory. Lucas Weinert came on to eat up some innings after Downey was removed by new Indians Manager Justin Jurek. Ben Schwalbach's base hit in the fourth inning broke up Midland's possibility of a no-hitter. The lopsided loss did not prevent the Indians from advancing to Sunday's semifinal round of this seven-team tournament. Gladstone will face DePere, Wis., at 9:30 Sunday morning in Escanaba. The other semifinal pits Escanaba against Midland Berryhill. The Indians game will not be broadcast on the radio because of religious programming. If Gladstone wins in the morning, then the championship game will be broadcast on WCHT-AM (600), and on-line at www.rrnsports.com.
