Eskymos Sweep Doubles Flights To Beat Gladstone

ESCANABA----The Battle of Delta County was actually two different battles as the Escanaba Eskymos and Gladstone Braves met for the final time this season in Escanaba.

On the Escanaba High School tennis courts, there were the doubles matches, controlled by the Eskymos. At the same time in Ludington Park, the Braves won the first three singles matches. So, whether the match would end in a tie, or be an Eskymo victory, came down to the #4 singles match between Escanaba's T.J. Myrick and Gladstone's Hans Ahola.

Myrick, a sophomore who has played doubles all season and was playing just his second singles match of the year, pulled out a 6-2, 7-5 win to help the Eskymos win the team score over their Delta County rivals, 5-3.

Eskymo David Fix returns a serve.
"It was a great match," Eskymo Coach Jim Hansen said. "The kids all know each other and the games are all friendly but competitive. I'm really happy with the improvement of our kids right now. They have been working hard and have been getting better each meet, especially this week."

Aaron Parmet, Dan Williams, and Neal Sabin all had straight sets wins for Gladstone. The #2 doubles match was a marathon, as Escanaba's Steve Wood and Mike Shields lost the first set to Gladstone's Josh DeVet and John Hammar, 7-5.

But the young Eskymo doubles team rallied to win the next two sets, 6-2, 6-4, to take the match.

"Regardless of win or loss, everyone improved their scores from last time we met," Hansen said. "That is important to us."

Gladstone hosts Munising Thursday afternoon. The Eskymos travel to Menominee.
