Lake Linden-Hubbell High School senior Ben Wilson has been named the 2019 Gil Heard Award winner. This is given to a local athlete who overcomes adversity to succeed. In Wilson’s case, he has been a diabetic for most of his life, wearing an insulin pump to monitor his sugar. He overcame that to win spots on the All-Conference and All-UP teams in football. It's named in honor of the late Gil Heard, who was sports information director at Northern Michigan University for 23 years and also battled diabetes.

The Bay College Norse Softball team finished their first ever season with a 28-9 record and were regional runners-up this past season. As a team the Norse finished in the top 25 nationally in two statistical categories: 18th in the country in triples, 17th in batting average (.365) . Individually, pitcher Rhiley Hubert finished ninth in Division 2 with a 1.69 ERA. Emily Bruntjens ended up fourth in NJCAA Division 2 with eight triples, and 25th with a .473 batting average.
A total of 39 Northern Michigan University student-athletes were named to the 2019 Spring Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference All-Academic and all-Academic Excellence teams. The Iron Mountain Golds won the championship of the Escanaba Junior Cubs American Legion Baseball Tournament Sunday evening, beating Graetz Manufacturing of Coleman, Wis, 6-0, at Al Ness Field.
