Lake Linden-Hubbell High School senior Ben Wilson has been named the 2019 Gil Heard Award winner. This is given to a local athlete who overcomes adversity to succeed.
In Wilson’s case, he has been a diabetic for most of his life, wearing an insulin pump to monitor his sugar. He overcame that to win spots on the All-Conference and All-UP teams in football. It's named in honor of the late Gil Heard, who was sports information director at Northern Michigan University for 23 years and also battled diabetes.
