Cedarville Dominates Rapid River To Win Regional
![]() RAPID RIVER---The Cedarville High School football team brushed aside past playoff failures to post a dominating 28-0 win over the Rapid River Rockets Friday night in the MHSAA "Eight-Player" regional championship game in Rapid River. Mike Bailey rushed for 202 yards on 40 carries and scored two touchdowns for the Trojans. Quarterback Joey Duncan also scored two touchdowns for Cedarville. ![]() The game was played on a muddy field, under rainy, windy conditions. The Trojans drove 91 yards on 15 plays for a touchdown on the opening possession to set the tone for the game. That drive took more than six minutes off of the clock. Rapid River (10-1) missed an opportunity to grab the early lead on that drive, when the Rockets stopped Duncan well short of the first down of third-and-four. But Rapid River was called for a personal foul horse-collar penalty that gave the Trojans a first down. ![]()

The Rockets got the ball for the first time in great field position when Dave Hough returned the ensuing kickoff to the Cedarville 45 yard-line. The Rockets got one first down, but on first down from the Trojan 33, quarterback Mason Berglund fumbled. ![]() Bailey's three-yard run with 3:32 left in the second quarter made it 14-0. If Rapid River was ever to make a comeback, the team needed a good start to the third quarter. But instead, it was a disaster, as Hough fumbled the opening kickoff. The Trojans took advantage with a 41-yard drive, capped by a four-yard Duncan run. T0 make matters worse for the Rockets, when they got the ball back, down 22-0, Berglund threw an interception to Duncan. In all, Rapid River committed four turnovers: two fumbles, and two interceptions. Cedarville erased the memories of numerous playoff failures, after having strong regular seasons. In recent years, the Trojans were upset twice by Engadine in playoff games. And two years ago, Rapid River stunned Cedarville in the playoffs at DeTour, after losing by 60 points to the Trojans during a regular season game. And in the Trojans' last few years in 11-man football, they were upset by both Pickford and Mid Peninsula in playoff games...both games were at home, no less. But this time, the Trojans were the better team, outgaining the Rockets, 301-62 in total yardage. Cedarville ran 64 offense plays, while Rapid River ran just 30 plays.
