Rockets Stay Undefeated With Win Over Cougars
![]() EBEN JUNCTION---The Rapid River Rockets scored five touchdowns in the first half and cruised to a 42-8 win over the Superior Central Cougars Saturday in Eben. Lucas Bero had four of the scores: two on the ground, and two receiving. ![]() But the Rocket offense was dominant against the young Cougars, who have 12 freshmen on their 22-player roster. Bero was a man amongst boys as he routinely carried several would-be tacklers for extra yardage. And quarterback Mason Berglund was on target with most of his passes. The Rockets scored their first touchdown with 6:18 left in the first quarter as Berglund hooked up with his favorite target, Michael Casey, on a 20-yard strikes. A pass to Bero for two points made it 8-0, then, with 1:05 left in the quarter, Bero scored from four yards out. The conversion failed, but Rapid River still had a 14-0 lead. The Rapid River defense was quite good, as well. Mike Larsen stripped the ball from a Cougar receiver, leading to a fumble that Josh Parrett fell on. Also, Ben Rubick put a big hit on the same receiver, leading to another fumble recovered by Austin Wicklund. In the second quarter, Berglund found Casey behind the defense for a 29-yard touchdown pass that made it 20-0 with 8:30 left in the half. Less than three minutes later, Berglund threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Bero. ![]() Parrett took over at quarterback, and with 37 seconds left in the half, Parrett passed to Bero for a 30-yard touchdown. The two-point conversion went from Parrett to Wicklund, making it 36-0. The second half was played on a running clock under the state's mercy rule. Bero scored his fourth touchdown of the game with 7:18 left in the third quarter. Superior Central (2-5) was able to break the shutout with less than two seconds left in the fourth quarter when Elijah Pasinen scored from five yards out. Senior Jake Aho ran in the two-point conversion, making the final score 42-8. The game was Superior Central's Homecoming game. Rapid River improved to 7-0 on the season, and will get another win next week with a forefeit from Mid Peninsula, which cancelled its football program this fall. The Rockets will host the Bellaire Eagles on Oct. 24 with what could be for the championship of the Bridge Alliance Conference. Bellaire is also 7-0, but has to face Cedarville (6-1) next week before coming to Rockets Homecoming.
