The Westwood Patriots slipped past the West Iron County Wykons, 20-19, to win the MHSAA Upper Peninsula Division Two championship on Thursday. The Negaunee Miners repeated as MHSAA Division One Upper Peninsula tennis champions on Thursday, edging Marquette, 15-13, at Kingsford High School. Menominee took third with nine points, followed by Kingsford (8), Gladstone (6), and Escanaba (5). The Miners won two flights and were runners-up in four others. Gladstone won the #1 doubles title, with Taylor Trudeau and Sydney Herioux winning a three-set thriller in the final.
The Manistique High School volleyball team posted a 3-0 win over the Escanaba Eskymos in a tough battle Thursday night that saw the Emeralds rally to win two of the three sets. Gladstone High School senior Reece Castor has committed to attend school and play basketball at Northern Michigan University next fall. Castor is a three-year starter for the Braves, and was an All-U.P. selection last year. Castor made his announcement Wednesday on social media.
