Christer Carne scored a hat trick and Nick Kolich added a three-assist playmaker for the Eskymos. Grant Wickham had a goal and two assists, while Ethan Silverstone and Chris Sliva also scored. Trevor Denome made 17 saves in net. Escanaba (1-1) hosts Negaunee Monday night to close out a three-game homestand.

The Carney-Nadeau High School volleyball team lost to top-ranked Leland-3-0, in the state semifinals Friday in Battle Creek. The scores were 25-21, 25-14, 25-16. Leland’s Ella Siddall had 34 assists and five aces, while senior Hanna Elwell had 17 kills for Leland (47-10-1). Carney, playing in its first volleyball semifinal ever, got a big defensive performance from junior Alanis Harris, who had 22 digs. The No. 9 Wolves finished 26-4-1.

The Escanaba High School volleyball team had its season come to an end Wednesday night after a marathon loss to the Houghton Gremlins in the district semifinals, 3-2. Escanaba won the first set, 25-19, before the Gremlins evened the match, also 25-19. Christian Laettner put on a series of camps in Gladstone on Sunday. He was a two-time national champion at Duke University, played 13 seasons with several teams in the NBA, and was a member of the U.S. Olympic Basketball Team. The Escanaba Eskymos beat the Ludington Orioles, 27-20, Saturday afternoon in their playoff opener. The time for the second round playoff game has been announced. Escanaba will travel to Alma next Saturday for a 12:00 noon kickoff. Against Ludington, The Eskymos took the lead in the final minute on a hook-and-lateral play, with Ben Willis getting the Craig Kamin pass and tossing it to Josh Bruntjens, who ran for the touchdown. Ludington had one last chance, but an interception by Nick Ramos (and a fumble recovery by Alex Lynch) sealed the game for the Eskymos.
The Forest Park Trojans and Rapid River Rockets pulled off playoff surprises Friday night as the post-season began. Brody Sanville scored four touchdowns to lead the Gladstone High School football team to a 42-22 win over the Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes under cold, wet conditions Saturday in the Copper Country. The Gladstone High School football team lost another close game Friday night, falling to the Marquette Redmen, 21-14, in Marquette. The Redmen led, 14-0, before the Braves tied the game on a 62-yard Jared Crow-to-Vince Hughes touchdown pass and a 25-yard touchdown run by Brody Sanville. Marquette, however, got four interceptions on defense and scored the winning touchdown on a six-yard run by Brady Wright with 1:49 left.
