The Escanaba Eskymos rolled to the championship of the Munising Cross Country Invitational Tuesday at Valley Spur. Andrew Stenberg won the race by almost a full minute, with his teammate Jordan Ogren in second place. The Esky girls were second. Click the above headline to read more details.

The Gladstone Braves and Escanaba Eskymos opened the 2012 volleyball season in nearly identical fashion on Saturday as both local teams played in the Sault Invitational. It's been five months since the Carney-Nadeau boys basketball team made a surprising run to the Class D state semifinals, pulling upset after upset along the way. Two of boys who were big parts of that success were on the court again on Saturday, taking part in Michigan's All-Star Basketball Festival at the Palace of Auburn Hills. The Escanaba Eskymos have opened a new era in high school football as Jim Hansen has taken over as the new varsity coach. He replaces Dan Flynn, who retired earlier this year after 28 years as the coach. The team held its first annual "Orange and Black" scrimmage Friday night. The Gladstone Indians had their season come to an end on Friday with another extra-inning loss at the state tournament in Marquette. The Escanaba Cubs had their American Legion Baseball season come to an end on Friday as the Marquette Blues blanked the Cubs, 8-0, in a loser's bracket game at the state tournament. Alex DeHaan gave up four runs in the first two innings and took the loss. Ben Kleiman and Devin Olsen also pitched in relief for Escanaba. The U.P. Manistique High School graduate Mike Nagy won the Michigan Junior Amateur Golf Tournament championship Thursday in Flint. He defeated Otto Black of Pinckney Michigan 3-and-1 to win the title of the 34th annual event. The 18-year-old Nagy will attend the University of Tennessee this fall on a golf scholarship. The Gladstone Indians battled from behind to force extra innings at the state tournament on Thursday, but ended up losing to defending state champion Hudson, 13-11, in 11 innings. The Escanaba Cubs took a 5-0 lead into the final two innings of their state tournament game on Thursday, but it wasn't enough as Menominee rallied to tie the game and then win in ten innings, 6-5. The Escanaba Cubs may have only a .500 record, but the team seems to be peaking at the right time of the year. The Cubs carried a winning streak into this weekend's U.P. Hayden Hardwick's walk-off, three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted the Gladstone Indians to a 6-5 win over the Eastern U.P. Travelers Saturday in Gladstone. The Indians then used a lot of their younger players in the second game and dropped a 16-0 decision. Gladstone finishes the regular season with a 35-9 record. He may be just 15 years old, but Justin Jurek continues to make his mark on the Gladstone Indians baseball team in clutch situations.
