END OF THE LINE: Braves, Mustangs Fall At CMU
MT. PLEASANT---The "team" portion of the high school wrestling season came to an end Friday for the Gladstone Braves and Munising Mustangs as both U.P. schools lost in the quarterfinals at Central Michigan University. Gladstone lost to Remus Chippewa Hills, 48-24, in Division Three, while Munising fell to New Lothrop, 69-10, in Division Four. Munising was the eighth seed against the powerhouse New Lothrop team, and the Mustangs managed just two victories: senior Hunter Sadler earned a pin at 189 pounds, and Nick Miles earned four points for his team with a "major decision" victory. Gladstone, meanwhile, was seeded seventh in Division Three against the second-seeded Chippewa Hills Warriors. The Braves managed to get three wins by pin and two others by decision. The pins came from freshman 130-pounder Adam Bruce, senior 171-pounder James Bruce, and junior 160-pounder Austin Demeuse. The wins on points came from 125-pounder Vadym Torvinen, and, in a major upset, Braves 145-pound senior Bobby Beauchamp beat his state-ranked opponent, 6-3. The "team" portion of the wrestling season may be over, but the individual state finals still await more than two dozen Upper Peninsula at the Palace of Auburn Hills on March 3-5. |
