Braves Win Wrestling District; Regionals Next Week
BOYNE CITY---The Gladstone High School wrestling team made the long trip downstate to Boyne City on Thursday and came home with a district championship. The Braves beat Elk Rapids, 69-6, in the semifinals, and then topped Grayling, 49-27, in the championship. Gladstone will host the Division Three Regionals next Wednesday. In the championship match, Gladstone got points from throughout the lineup, building a 25-0 lead and never looking back. The key championship victories for the Braves: 130: Adam Bruce pinned Grayling's Ian Laveck in 1:51. 145: Bobby Beachamp pinned Grayling's Logan Joseph in 51 seconds. 152: Kostya Torvinen beat Grayling's Tyler Withers on points, 18-11. 160: Austin Demeuse pinned Grayling's Ashdon Frisbie in 1:38. 171: James Bruce beat Grayling's Devin Joseph in a major decision, 12-3. 285: Mason Frederick pinned Grayling's Zach Kelly in 2:18. Amongst Grayling's key wins: 125: Cole Hibbard over Gladstone's Vadym Torvinen, 9-7. 189: Reece Ferrigan pinned Gladstone's Jared Demeuse in 2:31. 215: Michael Phillips pinned Gladstone's Zach Bailey in 3:08. Gladstone will host the Division Three Regional Tournament next Wednesday. The Braves will face Iron Mountain in one semifinal, while Manistee will face the winner of the Oscoda district in the other. Semifinals are set for 5:30 ET on two mats, with the final to follow. Also, the Braves travel this Saturday to the individual districts in Manistee. |
