Gladstone, Escanaba Wrestlers Place At Invitational
GAYLORD---Thirty wrestling teams from across the northern part of the state converged on Gaylord Saturday for the Northern Michigan Championships, and Delta County's teams represented the area well at the daylong event. The Gladstone Braves took second place overall (156.5 points) with three champions and five finalists. The Escanaba Eskymos took fourth place overall, with 117.5 points. There were two All-Delta County championship matches on Saturday. In the 171 pound weight class, Gladstone's James Bruce defeated Escanaba's Breyden Papineau (pictured above) on a major decision, 13-3. In the 285-pound heavyweight weight class, Escanaba's Mohammed Hoque defeated Gladstone's Zack Bailey (pictured below) on a pin in one minute, nine seconds. Gladstone's third champion was junior Austin Demeuse at the 160 pound weight class. He won four matches in his 17-man bracket, with three of them coming on pins. Demeuse (pictured at left) beat Traverse City West's Mike Lambert in the championship on a pin in 1:32. In the 145 piund weight class, Gladstone senior Bobby Beauchamp lost for just the second time this season: a tense 1-0 decision to Gaylord's Tristan Blanzy in the final. The Braves' other wrestler to make the semifinals was 140-pounder Alex Chouniard, who finished fourth. Escanaba's Ean Bevins (130 pounds) finished third, Nick Onate (119 pounds) took fourth, amd Scout Wunder (145 pounds) finished fourth. Two other Upper Peninsula wrestlers won championships in their weight classes. Munising senior Hunter Sadler won his 189-pound weight class title with a 3-1 win over Charlevoix's Mick Hinkle.
