Escanaba native John Barnes was hired Friday as the new women's basketball head coach at Youngstown State University, a NCAA Division I school located in eastern Ohio. The Detroit Red Wings announced on Wednesday that Northern Michigan University goaltender Jared Coreau has signed a three-year entry level contract with the NHL team. The high school girls softball season began this weekend with 24 games inside the NMU Superior Dome.
