ESCANABA----The Escanaba High School hockey team officially closed the 2012-13 season with the awards banquet at the House of Ludington.
Family and friends of the boys, as well as other Eskymo hockey supporters, enjoyed a mean and spent time together for the final time. Escanaba's seniors (Jake Eastin, Ben Lasecki, Nick Vandermissen, Brianna Belanger) were honored, as were the team's two student managers: seniors Luke Anthony and Jalyn Dagenais.
Many of the first-time Eskymo players got their first varsity letters, and all of the boys got medals for winning the Great Lakes Hockey Conference championship for the first time in school history (shared with Calumet).
There were seven individual awards given out. The list:
Most Valuable Player.......................Jake Eastin
Offensive Player of Year..................Levi Wunder
Defensive Player of Year.................Derek Chaillier
Little "I" Award.................................Nick LeMire
Mikey D Character Award...............Ben Lasecki
Player Of Tomorrow Award............Calvin Pinar
Eskymo Academic Award...............Calvin Pinar
The Eskymos also unveiled two banners that will be placed on the wall above the team's locker room next season. One is for the GLHC championship. The other (pictured above) recognizes the team's 24-4 record, which was the best in school history.

Eskymo freshman Dylan Gauthier in his wheelchair Wednesday night. He continues to heal after suffering a severe injury Feb. 7 in Chelsea. Gauthier is now back in school, and the cast on his injured leg may come off next week. He broke two bones and tore his Achille's while chasing a loose puck that night.
