MARQUETTE----It was a good start to the 2013 season on Friday for the Gladstone High School cross country teams. The Braves finished a solid second at the Marquette Invitational Relays in both the boys and girls races.
Under sunny skies, with temperatures in the 70's, the kids ran the course in pairs. Marquette dominated the team score in both....winning the girls race with just nine points...and the boys race with 12.
Marquette had the top three pairs in the girls race, and the top two in the boys relays.
For Gladstone, both teams ended up in second place with 25 points. There were eight schools represented in the boys race, and six schools entered the girls race.
There were 33 pairs of boys and 25 pairs of girls.
The top eight pairs in each gender were named medalists, and Gladstone had one pair in both. Chris Sedenquist and Andy Olesak finished fifth in the boys race, and the pair of Kyle McKenzie and Connor Powell finished eighth.
Gladstone's Anna Shier and Leigh Woelffer were medalists in sixth place for the girls.
Marquette's Lance Rambo and Cole Riebolt won the race in 32 minutes, 4 seconds. That was 92 seconds clear of Redmen teammates Logan Zeuger and Troy Sergey, who finished second in 33:36. Munising's Brett Hannah and Izaak Mahoski finished third.
Sedenquist/Olesak finished in 35:03; McKenzie/Powell ran it in 36:20.
In the girls race, Marquette's Lindsey Rudden and Amber Huebner were the easy winners in 34:43. Redettes teammates Calla Martysz and Shayla Huebner were second in 37:24, and Cassidy Thomas and Nichole Mackey were third in 37:44.
