Escanaba Girls Sweep; State Title Game On Monday
ESCANABA---It all comes down to seven innings of softball for a trip to Indiana. The Escanaba Senior Little League All-Stars (age 15-16) took care of business again on Sunday at the state tournament. And now the girls will play in the state championship game on their own field Monday morning, with a trip to regionals on the line. Escanaba finished round-robin play with a 4-0 record, and will face the District 15 champions from Edwardsburg in Monday's state final. Escanaba defeated Edwardsburg, 13-3, earlier in the tournament, but had to do so from behind after the downstate team scored twice in the top of the first inning. On Sunday, Edwardsburg had to rally twice to make it into Monday's final. First, they fell behind Taylor, 3-0, and had to come back twice to post a 10-8 win. Then, Edwardsburg fell behind Keweenaw, 7-0, in the fifth inning, before rallying to post a 9-7 victory. As for Escanaba, well, the girls got off to a sluggish start against Keweenaw. Escanaba scored three runs in the first inning and had a 5-0 lead going to the final inning, but several errors helped the Copper Country girls to get close. In fact, had the Keweenaw girls not had two runners thrown out on the basepaths in the fifth inning, they might have won. In the second inning, Escanaba added to the lead as Becca Piron ripped a triple to right field. Callie Heller got the shutout win the circle against Parchment, with help from Connor in relief. Escanaba had seven hits in the game while Parchment managed just two. The Escanaba-Edwardsburg state championship game will start at 10:00 Monday morning and it will be broadcast live on WCHT-AM (600), and on-line around the world at www.rrnsports.com.
