Gladstone Majors Stay Alive; Two Others Advance
GLADSTONE----The Gladstone Major Little League All-Stars (age 11-12) keep trying to dig out of a big hole as the district tournament continues at Don Howes Field. Gladstone completely used up two pitchers and lost to Munising in nine innings during the tournament's first game. So, since then, the Purple and White have been fighting to get back into contention for the district championship.
Gladstone's Cooper Cavadeas had two hits.
Jacob Viau pitched three innings, allowing one run on two hits, to earn the win. Ben Kelly tossed the fourth inning to finish off the victory. Gladstone took advantage of numerous walks, wild pitches, and stolen bases...along with a few defensive errors...to win going away. Gladstone scored three runs in the first inning, four more in the second, and 13 runs in the third inning to win its second straight game. Quinn Downey had a single, double, triple, and four runs scored for Gladstone. Brody Sanville had a two-run double and walked three times, also scoring four times. Cooper Cavadeas had two hits, three RBI, and two runs scored off the bench. Viau had two hits, three RBI, and one run scored...in addition to his three innings of pitching. He struck out four batters and walked one, and was chosen the Player of the Game. Viau also snared a hard-hit shot up the middle in the first inning for an out.
Schaffer catcher Devin Racicot.
Hudson Huff walked twice and Mason Korhonen also pitched for Schaffer. In other games in the tournament on Monday, Munising beat Tri-County, 13-2, to advance to the district finals, which will be held this weekend in Gladstone. The game was tied 2-2 in the second inning before Munising eventually pulled away to the win. In the western half of the bracket, Norway beat Kingsford, 9-0, to advance to the district finals. Iron Mountain North has already advanced from that area tournament. Click the above headline to see the pictures taken by Christina Creten during Monday's Gladstone-Schaffer game. |
