Indians Fall Behind Early But Mercy Hancock, 13-3
GLADSTONE---It didn't look good early on as the Gladstone Indians faced Hancock in a Mid-Pen League baseball contest Sunday afternoon at Don Olsen Field. Gladstone gave up three runs in the top of the first inning, and there was not much energy in the ballpark. But the Indians rebounded nicely to post a 13-3 win in a key Mid Pen League contest. The game was called by the mercy rule in the sixth inning. Later, Gladstone lost a non-league game to Hancock, 7-3, as many non-starters played. But in the opener, it was Jake Pearson on the hill for the Indians, and he struggled early on. He gave up hits to the first four batters he faced: Brad Juntunen, Dax Derocher, Mike Saari, and Ty Laduron. The result was three Hancock runs, and the bases were loaded. Pearson got out of that first inning, and retired 13 straight Hancock batters from there. Gladstone still trailed, 3-0, before things changed in the third inning. Lucas LaCosse drew a one-out walk, and then Justin Jurek got a pop fly single. Hunter Garling had the key hit that seemed to wake everybody up: a two-run triple to the outfield fence. That hit brought Gladstone to within 3-2, and every0ne seemed to gain some confidence. Cody Frazer singled in a run to tie the game, and after Hayden Hardwick was hit by a pitch, Jake Pearson came through with a run-scoring double. Jake Peterson added an RBI single and Lucas LaCosse addd a bases-loaded walk. All of a sudden, Gladstone was ahead, 6-3. The Indians expanded their lead with four runs in the fourth inning as James Capidolupo got a two-run single and LaCosse had an RBI hit. Gladstone added two runs in the fifth inning as seventh-grader Braden Lamberg singled home one of the runs. Then in the sixth inning, Hardwick drove home LaCosse with the run that ended the game on the ten-run mercy rule. Pearson got the pitching win, going five innings and allowing five hits. LaCosse threw the final two innings, and he did not allow a run or a hit in the relief appearance. In the second game, Gladstone lost, 7-3, in a non-conference battle. Peterson and LaCosse shared the pitching duties for the Indians. Owen Hanson and Cody Frazer both had three base hits in a losing effort for Gladstone. The second game did not count in the Mid Pen League standings. Gladstone (18-13-1) was supposed to play in Peshtigo (Wis.) on Monday. That game has been cancelled. The Indians will host Mid-County Tuesday night at 6:00 in another non-league game. Gladstone will also host the Marquette Blues Tuesday night at about 8:00. That Indians-Blues game will be broadcast live on WCHT-AM (600) and www.rrnsports.com. |
