Gladstone Indians Sweep Hancock In Doubleheader
HANCOCK---The Gladstone Indians won two American Legion baseball games on Saturday, sweeping a pair of high-scoring games at the Houghton County Fairgrounds in Hancock. The Indians posted 17-5 and 15-9 victories. In the first game, Gladstone jumped on Hancock starter Tanner LaDuron for four runs in the opening inning. Justin Jurek and Christian Groleau drew walks and Cody Frazer brought them both home with a triple. Jake Pearson singled home Frazer, and then Hunter Garling doubled to drive in Pearson for the fourth run of the inning. The Indians went ahead 6-0 in the third inning as Pearson doubled home one run and Christian Tackman singled in another.

After Groleau scored on an error, Pearson ripped another double to score Frazer. The Indians' top four batters (Jurek, Groleau, Frazer, Pearson) went eight-for-15 at the plate and scored 15 of the team's 17 runs. On the mound, Jurek went 5 2/3 for the win allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits. He struck out tweleve. Tackman worked the final 1 1/3 innings in relief. Tanner LaJuron took the loss on the mound for Hancock. Michael Saari had two hits and Johnny Ruotosa hit a solo home run for the home team. In the second game, the Indians got off to a quick start just like they did earlier in the day. In the first inning, Jurek got a hit and Groleau and Frazer walked. Pearson drove home the first run with a sacrafice fly, and then Garling ripped a two-run double. Gladstone's 3-0 lead was cut to two when LaJuron smacked an RBI double in the bottom of the first inning. The Indians took a 5-1 lead in the second inning when Elliot Danhoff doubled home a run. Danhoff later scored on a Groleau groundout. In the third inning, Gladstone put the game away with five more runs, albeit unearned runs. Tackman led off with a double, Lucas LaCosse walked, and then with two out, Jurek and Groleau both reached base on errors. Then Frazer made Hancock pay with a two-run double, putting the Indians in front, 10-1.

But it looked like Gladstone would mercy the game in the sixth inning when the Indians took a 13-3 lead. That didn't happen as Indians reliever Tackman had troubles. Tackman walked four batters in the bottom of the sixth inning, and Bobby Juntinen had an RBI hit for Hancock. And there was another defensive error, too. So, all of a sudden, the Gladstone lead was down to 13-7. The Indians got two runs in the top of the seventh, and Hancock scored twice in the bottom of the inning before Pearson came in to get the final two outs, ending the game with a sloppy 15-9 win. Groleau pitched five innings to earn the win. He allowed three runs (one earned) and gave up three hits. Groleau fanned seven batters. Saari pitched a complete game for Hancock, giving up all 15 runs. Gladstone is now 5-7 on the season, and 3-0 since the eight players from the high school team joined the Indians this week. The Indians have another game Monday night in Daggett against the Mid County Mavericks. |
