New-Look Gladstone Indians Win Baseball Opener
GLADSTONE---The Gladstone Indians team that took the field Wednesday night is not the same bunch of boys who will be on the field in late July when the playoffs begin. With the Gladstone High School starting a Braves baseball program for the first time, those kids will be in purple until sometime in June. But there are some boys from Rapid River who needed somewhere to play baseball, because they could not play for the Braves. And so Indians Manager Jim Groleau (who's son is playing for the Braves) assembled a make-shift Legion team to get through the first six weeks of the season. With the Rapid River boys joined by high school graduate Cody Frazer and a bunch of seventh and eighth graders, the Indians beat the Marquette High School Redmen, 9-7.
Hayden Hardwick bats for Gladstone.
"We saw lots of positives out there tonight," Groleau said. "We made some young mistakes and have a lot to learn but overall we (as coaches) were pleased."
The Indians jumped out to a 3-0 lead when Ben Schwalbach led off the first inning with single, and Frazer hit a rocket off the third baseman's chest for an infield single. Jake Pearson then ripped a two-run double to the wall in right-center field for a 2-0 lead.
After a wild pitch, Pearson scored on a Hardwick groundout. The Indians added solo runs in the second and third innings. Jack Stevenson singled to lead off the second and scored on an error. A bigger Indian inning was thwarted when, with the bases loaded and only one out, Hardwick smashed a line drive that hit Frazer, who was leading off second. Pearson was forced out at second for a double play. Stevenson then had an RBI groundout in the third inning, scoring Owen Hansen (who opened the inning with a single). It was 5-0 Indians at that point.
Indians' Jake Pearson did not allow a run.
Schwalbach came on to pitch in the fourth inning, and gave up one run. The Indians got it back in the bottom half of the inning. But in the fifth inning, the Redmen rallied against the young Schwalbach. With two out and two on, Jake Olsen hit a routine fly to left field. Indian left fielder Spencer La Fave lost the ball in the night sky and Olsen cruised into second with what was scored as a two-run double. Then Schwalbach's pick-off attempt ended up in the left field corner for an error, scoring a run and cutting Gladstone's lead to 6-4. Another Gladstone youngster, Braden Lambert, came on to throw in the sixth inning. He walked the bases loaded, and with one out, a run scored on a passed ball. Then Marquette's Olsen came through with a two-run single to give Marquette the lead. But in the bottom of the sixth, the Indians rallied with three runs. Lucas Bero led off with a single, and then Pearson reached on an error. Hardwick then ripped a shot to the 350 sign in left-center field to put the Indians back in front, 8-7. Hardwick then scored on a Josh Parrett groundout, giving Gladstone an insurance run. Hardwick then pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning to preserve the Indians victory. The Indians are off until next Wednesday, when they play the Marquette Blues in Marquette. The next home game is May 11th, a 1:00 doubleheader against Menominee.
Cody Frazer is back behind the plate for the Indians after a year of study at Oakland University
