Gladstone Boys, Marquette Girls Win G.N.C. Titles

GLADSTONE---The Gladstone Braves suffered a ten-point loss when senior Justin Pederson had a false start in the 100-meter dash, an event he normally dominates.

But despite that, and a couple of other subpar performances, the Braves boys track team still won the Great Northern Conference championship Thursday afternoon.

"It says a lot about the boys that they can suffer those losses, but still win," Gladstone Athletic Director and Assistant Track Coach Matt Houle said. "I'm proud of them."

Gladsone outdistanced Menominee, 138-104, with Marquette finishing third with 93 points. Kingsford was in fourth place (87), Escanaba finished fifth (81), and Stephenson (20) was in sixth place.

Pederson bounced back from his loss in the 100 to break the school record in the long jump (21 feet 7 inches, pictured above), and he won the high jump (5'10").

Fellow senior Jared Vuksan won the shot put (52') and discus (140'7"), and he finished second behind Pederson in the long jump (19'8"). Vuksan was also part of the 400 relay team that finished second behind Menominee

The Maroons dominated the 110 hurdles, with Tyler Harmon and Bryan Hines finishing first and second (Harmon in 15.26, and Hynes 15.79). Hines won the 300 hurdles.

Escanaba won the 3200 relay race, and Eskymo Eric Cousineau won the 3200 run in 10:34. Teammate Andrew Stenberg was third.

Marquette's Lance Rambo won the 1600 run, and took Rambo took second in between the two Eskymos in the 3200 (two-mile) run.

Gladstone's depth was the key to the team championship. For example, in the 400, Chris Sedenquist took second and Kyle Kleiman finished third.

In the girls meet, Marquette was the runaway winner. Lindsey Rudden led the way by breaking a conference record in the 1600 run, finishing in five minutes, ten seconds.

Marquette had 193 points. Escanaba was second with 116.5. Kingsford took third with 86 points, Menominee was fourth (81.5), Gladstone fifth (36), and Stephenson had ten points and finished sixth.

All ten Eagles points came from a victory in the pole vault.

Kingsford's Carlee Benzie won the 100 (12.79), and the long jump (15'7"). Marquette's Hunter Viitala won the 300 hurdles (48.22) and the high jump (4'10"). Gladstone's Jessica Young won the discus (103'4").

Escanaba's Holly Ettehnhofer took second place in three events: discus (91'), pole vault (8'6"), and shot put (29'9").
