Gladstone Boys, Escanaba Girls Win Track Meets

ESCANABA---The track teams from all seven Delta County schools converged on the Escanaba High School track Thursday for the annual county track meet.

It's the only meet of the year when the five small schools compete directly with the bigger Escanaba Eskymos and Gladstone Braves. For all of them, it was the first meet of the season, other than the Superior Dome meets that happened last week in Marquette.

The Gladstone Braves easily won the boys championship while the Escanaba Eskymos dominated the girls meet.

BRAVES DOMINATE BOYS MEET---Gladstone's Justin Pederson dominated the track, and the mat. He won the 100 meter dash (11.20), the high jump (6'02), long jump (20'08), and was the anchor on the winning 800-meter relay winning team (1:36.44).

Braves senior Jared Vuksan won the discus (144 ft, 11 in), the shot put (51 ft, 10 in), and was the anchor in the first-place 400-meter relay team (46.64 seconds).

Gladstone's Chris Sedenquist won the 200-meter dash in 23.93 seconds, while his teammate Riley Ballard was second in 24.12 seconds.

Sedenquist was also part of the Braves' 1600-meter relay team that won first place.

And Gladstone's Zach Sturdy won the pole vault, landing in 12-feet, six inches.

The Escanaba Eskymos got winners from Andrew Stenberg in the 1600 run (4:55.11), and Eric Cousineau in the 3200 run (10:46.88, while Stenberg finished second in 10:46.89).

Other Eskymo first-place winners included Quinlan Hillesheim in the 300 intermediate hurdles (47.47 seconds), and Jake Walker in the 800-meter run (2:10.30). Walker was second in the 400. The Eskymos also won the 3200-meter relay.

Among the winners from the county's small schools: Cole Potvin of Big Bay deNoc won the 400-meter dash in 51.81 seconds. And Riley Pajnich of Rapid River won the 110-meter hurdles in 17.37 seconds.

Rocket teammate Steven Johnson was second, and Mid Peninsula's Brett Branstrom was second in the discus and was second in the shot put.

ESKYMOS DOMINATE GIRLS MEET---The Escanaba Eskymos nearly every event in the girls meet on Thursday, and in many cases, took the top two or three places.

Escanaba's Lynsey Collins won the 300 hurdles in 50.31 seconds, with teammates Sunny Martineau finishing second and Haile Waters third.

Collins also won the 200 meter dash (27.57), and the 100-meter dash (13.31). And Collins was a part of the winning 1600-meter relay team, anchoring it to a win in 4:38.17.

Fellow Eskymo Brittinie Larson also had a strong day. She won the 1600 meter run by a fraction of a second over teammate Amy Giese in 5 minutes, 57.55 seconds. Larson also won the 800 meter run in 2:41.58, with teammate Aubree Peterson second. And Larson and Peterson were both part of the 3200 meter relay team that took first.

Martineau won the 300 meter hurdles (18.09), and Peterson won the 400 meter  dash in 1:05.12. Teammate Isabelle Wellman was second. Giese won the 3200 meter run (13:28.00), with Eskymo teammate Taylor Oswald second (13:52).

The only running event not won by the Eskymos was the 800-meter relay, which was run by the Bark River-Harris Bronco team of Karleigh Sundquist, Alex Parrotta, Aleesa Madalinski, and Kortney Jenshak. They won it in 1:58.51, with Gladstone second.

Rapid River's Neena Brockway won the shot put (30 ft, 3 in), and Bark River-Harris's Parrotta won the high jump (5-feet-2 inches).

Gladstone's Jessica Young won the discuss with a throw of 102 feet even. And Escanaba's Holly Ettenhofer won the pole vault, landing in 7-feet-6 inches.
