Escanaba Eskymo Hockey Coach McCarthy Resigns
![]() ESCANABA---Tim McCarthy has resigned as the head coach of the Escanaba High School hockey program. He was the coach for the past two seasons, leading the Eskymos to the Division Two regional championship game in both seasons. But after turning in his resignation on Wednesday, McCarthy said that it's "time". ![]()

And that goes, too, for his job at Northern Machining and Repair of Escanaba. "Our business has grown and work has become very demanding," McCarthy said. "I found that I was shortchanging my work, and not giving them 100 percent. It's what I get paid to do. I have to focus more on that, and I didn't want to shortchange the hockey program." Escanaba Eskymo Athletic Director Dave Wilson appreciated McCarthy's efforts. "This is a very sad day for Escanaba Eskymo hockey," said Wilson, who played on the first Eskymo hockey team in the 1980's. "Tim was good at keeping things simple, and he had excellent coaches with him. He let those coaches coach. I will miss Tim." McCarthy led his team to a 37-17-1 record over the past two seasons, including a 4-2 record in the post-season. His Eskymos lost in the regional championship game in both seasons, both times by one goal, to Traverse City Central and Saginaw Heritage. ![]()
Tim McCarthy's finest moment as a coach: an 8-0 playoff win at Marquette in March.
"We'll be playing Houghton (next season) for the first time in ten years. I'm very, very proud to have been a part of it." McCarthy's resignation means that the Eskymo program will have its fifth head coach in eight years when the new hockey season starts this November. "Whoever takes over should be set," McCarthy said. "They've got a great foundation. I think it's all positive. I wish I could continue on. I'm going to miss the kids, and the opportunity to watch them grow." Wilson says that the job will be posted soon for potential applicants. "Tim put everything he had into the program," Wilson said. "All of the off-season stuff he did, checking on kids' grades and teaching them that it's Family First, School Second, and Hockey Third. It is a sad day to be an Escanaba Eskymo to lose Tim McCarthy." ![]()
