Esky Kids Prepare For High School Hockey Season
 WELLS---The National Hockey League is on strike, or lockout, or whatever. But that does not mean that all hockey is silenced. Here in our local community, the Escanaba Junior Hockey Association is putting on leagues and programs to help kids of all ages learn...and enjoy... the game they love. It is hockey in its purist form. The EJHA has sponsored a boys hockey team this fall that is not affiliated with the Escanaba High School, but allows many of the 2012-13 Eskymo hockey players a chance to get some ice-time before the official practice time begins. No Eskymo coaches are involved in these games, and the kids will still have to go through official try-outs in November to earn spots on the Eskymo hockey team. But make no mistake about it: these kids see themselves as Eskymos, and are playing with that pride. And it is important to note that this "pre-season" team is not made up of only boys. No, sir! With the apparent collapse of the Great Lakes Wolfpack girls hockey team, there are three girls who are playing on this EJHA pre-season team, and these girls could very well try out for the Eskymo high school team in November. Brianna Belanger, Jalyn Dagenais, and Shelby Gregoire are all taking part in games and practices with the boys. And Belanger scored a goal in one of Escanaba's games against Calumet on Sunday. Escanaba and Calumet tied at 2-2, then Calumet won, 4-3, later on. Thanks to Lisa Dagenais for the photos.
