(NMU Photos) SATURDAY GAME RECAP MARQUETTE, Mich. - The NMU hockey team dropped the second game of its weekend series with Bowling Green 5-2. The hot hands of Tanner Latsch (5-1--6) and Rasmus Larsson (2-0--2) continued, as both of them scored their second goal of the weekend. Grayden Slipec (6-7--13), Medrick Bolduc (2-2--4), and Anthony Cliche (3-2--5) all recorded assists. Starter Ryan Ouellette was relieved after 24 minutes of playing time, making 12 saves. Julian Molinaro entered in relief, making 22 saves in 33 minutes for a .957 SV%. Colby Browne had a penalty shot attempt in the second period, hitting the post. The last Wildcat to make a penalty shot was Vincent De Mey on December 18, 2020, against Michigan Tech. The Falcons were awarded the first power play of the game and were able to convert. After a goal was overturned by a high stick, the Falcons would score legitimately off the ensuing faceoff, giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead. The Falcons made it 2-0 before the period ended from a broken play. A Wildcat player was interfered with in the Falcon end and went uncalled by the officials. The Falcons broke out of the zone, Kabanov snuck into a soft area in the slot, and elevated the puck from in close to beat Ouellette. A seeing-eye pass from the left corner found the stick of O'Hara left alone in the slot, and the captain fired home a shot that beat the sliding Ouellette to give the Falcons a 3-0 lead and end Ouellette's night. The 'Cats got on the board after a hard-working forecheck from Slipec was finished off by Larsson, a perfectly placed shot over the glove of Stoever on the far side. ![]() MARQUETTE, Mich. - The NMU hockey team dropped a heartbreaker on Friday night vs the Falcons, falling 3-2 in overtime. The Wildcats battled all night, tying the game twice and ultimately sending this one to overtime. It started with Rasmus Larsson (1-0--1) scoring his first career collegiate goal to open the scoring in the third period, tying the game at 1-1 off a wicked wrist shot. Colby Browne (0-1--1) picked up his first career collegiate point with an assist on Larsson's goal. Then, down 2-1 with two minutes left, the 'Cats pulled their netminder for an extra attacker. Captain Tanner Latsch (4-1--5) found a rebound in the crease and scored with a minute left to send the game to overtime. Jakub Altrichter made a great play in the extra frame, beating a defender and forcing the Falcons to take a penalty, giving the Cats an opportunity to win on the man advantage, but the Wildcats were unable to convert on the opportunity. Not long after the penalty expired, the Falcons forced a turnover and scored on an odd-man rush, surviving overtime and escaping with a win. Danny Ciccarello (0-4--4), Anthony Cliche (3-1--4), and Altrichter (3-12--15) all picked up an assist. Ryan Ouellette made 34 saves on the evening, posting a .919 SV%. The Falcons outshot the Wildcats 37-24, both teams were unsuccessful on their man-advantage opportunities, and the 'Cats held a slight advantage in faceoff wins with 31 to 28. Both Jackson Niedermayer (2-5--7) and Ethan Scardina (4-5--9) recorded a goal and assist, and Christian Stoever made 22 saves (.917 SV%). Down the stretch, the Wildcats pulled Ouellette with two minutes to go, and it paid off. Cliche fired a shot from the point and Stoever gave up a rebound in the slot. Latsch was Johnny-on-the-spot to collect the loose change and beat the outstretched glove hand of Stoever, effectively sending the game to overtime. Altrichter made a great move to beat his defender and streak in on a breakaway, forcing BG to take a penalty. The Cats then had a power play opportunity in overtime. The 'Cats had multiple good looks to win but were ultimately unsuccessful, and the Falcons responded. Scardina took the puck away from a Wildcat defender to spring Niedermayer on a two-on-one. The senior forward took his shot and beat Ouellette over the glove hand. |
