The Escanaba High School baseball team honored its Class of 2026 Wednesday night, and then beat the Marquette Sentinels, 11-1, at Al Ness Field. The seven seniors were recognized in the pre-game ceremony, which included the traditonal "passing of the torch", where the seniors throw a pitch to the underclassmen. The Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association on Friday releeasesd its All-U.P. boys basketball teams. A group of 18 reporters from across the entire U.P. met earlier in the week in Marquette to make the selections. Westwood Patriots senior Ethan Marta was chosen as Mr. Basketball, along with being the Division 1-3 Player of the Year and member of the all-class Dream Team. Northern Michigan Athletics has named Keil Ganz as its next head men's basketball coach, Athletic Director Rick Comley announced Friday. Ganz returns to Marquette after spending the 2025-26 season as an assistant coach at the University of Wisconsin Green Bay. This marks his third stint with the Wildcats program, as he previously served as associate head coach during the 2024-25 season and as an assistant coach in 2023-24, following an earlier stop in 2019-20. The Northern Michigan University women's lacrosse team downed the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals, winning 23-1, Friday, in the Superior Dome. The Houghton Gremlins and Marquette Sentinels battled to a 0-0 tie after two periods of play in a MHSAA Division Three state quarterfinal game Saturday night at the Northern Michigan University Berry Events Center. One of the most dominant careers in Northern Michigan men's basketball history reached new heights on Saturday afternoon, as Dylan Kuehl surpassed 2,000 career points in a dominant 75-53 win at Ferris State.
