SATURDAY GAME RECAP MARQUETTE, Mich. - The NMU men's hockey team completed the sweep of the Lake State Lakers on Saturday, sinking the Lakers 4-3 in overtime to take a 2-0 lead in the Cappo Cup season series and five of a possible six points from the weekend. Josh Zinger scored the game-winner in overtime, the first career game-winning goal of his collegiate career. Kristof Papp scored two goals and assisted on Zinger's game-winner, his third multi-goal game as a member of the 'Cats second three-point night. Charlie Glockner made his first start of the season, making 24 saves on 27 shots. The 'Cats dominated the first period, but the Lakers scored a late-period four-on-four goal to go into the locker room for the second consecutive time. The Lakers had a chance early in the second to take momentum in their favor, but Glockner made two huge saves on the PK to keep the 'Cats within on. NMU would go on to score twice in the second, with goals coming less than two minutes apart, building on the momentum gained from the goaltender. The 'Cats started the third frame on their heels, allowing a goal two minutes in, and Lake State seemed to have life. On the ensuing shift, however, Papp scored to give the 'Cats the lead once again, a terrific response from Potulny's top line a minute later. The 'Cats thought this one was put away, but Westcott fired home his second of the evening with 22 seconds left in the frame, sending the game to overtime. It was all 'Cats in the overtime frame, and Zinger capped off the effort as he finished his chance from a slick feed from Ghantous. The Wildcats now improve to 3-6-1 overall and 3-3-0 conference record with 10 points. The Lakers fall to 5-5-0 overall and 2-2-0 in conference with five points. FRIDAY GAME RECAP MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Northern Michigan University men's hockey team welcomed the Lake Superior State Lakers to the Berry Events Center for game one of the Cappo Cup series, sinking the Lakers 6-4. Captain Artem Shlaine netted his first career hat trick as a Wildcat, fueling the 'Cats over the Lakers in this high-scoring affair. Despite being down 1-0 going into the second period, the 'Cats scored three times in both the second and the third period. Michael Van Unen scored his first goal back from injury to start the NMU scoring, followed by Michael Mesic and Shlaine's first. The Lakers scored 15 seconds into the third and then took the lead three minutes later, but another three-goal surge was on the horizon for the 'Cats.
