Eskymo, Rocket Softball Seasons End In Regionals

It was the end of the line for the Escanaba and Rapid River High School girls softball teams on Saturday. Both local teams lost in "walk-off" fashion in the regional semifinals.

Escanaba lost to Remus Chippewa Hills, 1-0, while Rapid River fell to Rogers City, 3-2.

For Escanaba, Jaymie Frappier pitched a strong game, keeping the Warriors off the board all morning long. But a defensive breakdown in the bottom of the seventh inning plated the game's only run. Sydney Gafner had three hits in a losing effort for the Eskymos.

Frappier (pitcher), Gafner (outfielder) and Callie Heller (shortshop) all made the All-Region team at their respective positions. Becca Piron (catcher) and Jenn Koish (first baseman) were at-large selections for All-Region Tournament Team.

Five Escanaba High School girls softball players were named to the Division Two All-District Team by the Michigan High School Softball Coaches Association. Michelle LaFave (third base), Heller (shortstop), Frappier (pitcher), Ashley Cook and Gafner (outfielders).

The Rockets lost to Rogers City, 3-2, as the Hurons scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning off Rapid River pitcher Savannah Stenlund. Rapid River had loaded the bases in the top of the seventh inning, but could not get the tie-breaking run.
