East All-Stars Rally Past West At Superior Dome

MARQUETTE---The seventh-annual Upper Peninsula High School football game was held Saturday afternoon at the Northern Michigan University Superior Dome. Eighty of the top graduating seniors from across the U.P. played in the game.


After a wild start, the East beat the West, 41-24.

The East team included four kids from Escanaba: Trais Heller, Bailey Lamb, Cam Beversluis, Steve Wood. Rapid River's Jake Pearson and Hayden Hardwick were also on the East team, along with Gladstone's Chris Richer and Bark River's Kyle Kleiman.

Also on the East team, seven members of the state champion Ishpeming Hematites.

But it was the West team that led, 21-13, in the second quarter on a pair of touchdown runs by North Dickinson's Matt Schultz and a 60-yard touchdown pass from Crystal Falls's Jeff Johnson to Menominee' s Devon Harris.

The East team, which has now won six straight All-Star games, outscored the West 28-3 from the middle part of the second quarter on. Ishpeming's Alex Briones hooked up with St. Ignace's Kyle Winkleman for an 85-yard touchdown pass, then he threw another touchdown pass to his Hematite teammare, Mitch Laurin.

The offensive Most Valuable Players were Briones for the East and Harris for the West. The defensive MVP's were Ishpeming's Bobby Zhulkie for the East and North Dickinson's Brad Gustafson for the West.
