Lake Linden-Hubbell High School senior Ben Wilson has been named the 2019 Gil Heard Award winner. This is given to a local athlete who overcomes adversity to succeed. In Wilson’s case, he has been a diabetic for most of his life, wearing an insulin pump to monitor his sugar. He overcame that to win spots on the All-Conference and All-UP teams in football. It's named in honor of the late Gil Heard, who was sports information director at Northern Michigan University for 23 years and also battled diabetes.

The Iron Mountain Golds won the championship of the Escanaba Junior Cubs American Legion Baseball Tournament Sunday evening, beating Graetz Manufacturing of Coleman, Wis, 6-0, at Al Ness Field.
