The Michigan High School Athletic Association's Division 3 U.P. Golf Finals were held on Thursday in Delta County. But it was teams from opposite ends of the U.P. that took top honors on the links. The Gladstone Indians American Legion Baseball team managed to get just two base hits, but took advantage of five Ishpeming errors to post a 4-0 win Tuesday at Don Olsen Field.

The Escanaba High School tennis team closed the regular season by posting a 5-2 win over the West Iron County Wykons Tuesday night in Iron River. The #4 singles match was rained out. Escanaba won three of the four doubles matches, and the Eskymos got wins from Tyler Myrick and John Brant at #2 and #3 singles, respectively.

The Escanaba High School baseball team blew a 4-0 lead and lost to the Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils, 6-5, Saturday at the Sault Baseball Invitational in the eastern U.P. The Gladstone High School boys track team followed up its MHSAA regional championship victory by easily capturing the Great Northern Conference championship on Thursday in Marquette. The Braves won the team title with 151 points, while Kingsford was a distant second. Escanaba finished fifth.

The Marquette Redmen ran away with the Great Northern Conference tennis title on Thursday, but the Escanaba Eskymos and Gladstone Braves left the meet feeling good about their performances. The winds were so strong at Iron Town Field Thursday that routine fly balls turned into extra base hits, and the players were being pelted with pebbles that were swirling around with every gust. The Escanaba Eskymos and Negaunee Miners managed to battle through it, though, and the Eskymos left town with a 15-8 victory.

It was a typcial Escanaba vs Gladstone match-up as the two teams met in softball Tuesday at Lemmerand Park. There was strong defense and good pitching by both teams, but the Braves managed to pull out a pair of victories: 2-0 and 1-0.
Christine Sharon and Alison Austin each picked up pitching victories for Gladstone, while Codi Jenshak (pictured) took the loss in both games for Escanaba.

The Escanaba Eskymos and Gladstone Braves tennis teams both had tough assignments on Tuesday, as they both played against powerhouse teams from Marquette County.
And the result was the same for both Delta County teams. The Marquette Redmen beat the Eskymos, 7-1, while the Negaunee Miners swept the Braves, 8-0.

The Gladstone Indians American Legion Baseball team had its nine-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday as the boys lost to the Marquette Blues, 5-2, in Marquette. The loss left a bitter taste in the mouth of Indians Manager Jim Groleau, who objected to a play on the bases that left first baseman Hayden Hardwick's arm in a sling.

The Manistique High School softball team has now won six straight games. The Emeralds won the championship of its "Pink Tournament" on Saturday, beating Munising, 4-2, and Norway, 9-3. The Emeralds made just one error in the doublehader. "You can't go wrong when you get defense like that," Manistique Coach Dave McNeil said. Haley MacGregor got the pitching victory in both games.

The Gladstone High School boys track team used its "home track" advantage to power past five other teams and win the MHSAA Division One regional championship on Thursday. Jared Vuksan broke the school record in the shot put and Justin Pederson won two field events and was part of winning relay team. Luckily for the Escanaba High School baseball team, the road through the state tournament does not include a trip across the Menominee River into Wisconsin.
