Stenson, Frazer Lead Tribe to Sweep In Kingsford

KINGSFORD----One week from now, we'll know exactly what the Gladstone Indians baseball team is made of. That's after the boys play four tough games in the Gregg Johnson Memorial Tournament, including one against powerhouse Midland Berryhill.

But for now, the Indians are undisputedly the tops in the Mid Peninsula League after posting a convincing Fathers Day doubleheader sweep in Kingsford, 11-2 and 11-6.

The Indians completed a season-series sweep of the Blues, and virtually assured themselves of the Mid Pen League's South Division title. And the Tribe stays a game ahead of the Marquette Blues for top spot in the overall league standings.

In Sunday's opener, Jake Pearson and Matt Weyers combined on a one-hitter on the mound, and they got plenty of run support against Blues pitcher Austin Murdock.

Gladstone took a 2-0 lead in the second inning as Hayden Hardwick singled and Weyers drew a walk.  Hardwick scored on an error and Weyers scored on a sacrafice fly by Lucas LaCosse. Gladstone added three more runs in the third inning to lead 5-0.

Peyton Jurek singled and Cody Frazer doubled to drive in Jurek. It was the first of four hits that Frazer would have in the game. Jared Stenson followed with a single, and Pearson ripped a double to score both Frazer and Stenson.

Kingsford closed to within 5-2 in the bottom of the third inning as Pearson ran into troubles on the mound. Kyle Sexton drew a leadoff walk, Murdock was hit by a pitch, and they both scored on errors.

But Gladstone again responded in the fourth inning.  Paul Tomaszewski led off with a single, got bunted to second, and scored on a Frazer single.

Stenson singled and after Frazer and Stenson pulled off a double steal, Pearson's sacrafice fly made it 7-2.

Pearson continued struggling on the mound in the fourth inning as he walked the bases loaded.  But he struck out Shawn Sexton to end the threat.

Gladstone added two runs in the sixth on Stenson's RBI double and Hardwick's RBI single to make it 9-2. And the Indians added two more runs in the top of the seventh on a Jurek single and a Frazer sacrafice fly.

Weyers come on to relieve Pearson in the fifth, and the 19-year-old righty retired the first eight batters he faced.  Weyers gave up a walk in the seventh inning, but Shawn Sexton was thrown out trying to steal. Weyers was credited with a save.

So, it was a relatively-easy opener for the Indians, but the second game started more slowly as Kingsford took a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

Kyle Sexton walked, Bryce Kerschner doubled to score Sexton .and Murdoch walked.  Paul Deyeart singled to score Kerschner to make it 2-0. But on that play,  Jurek, playing in center field, threw out Murdock at the plate to end the inning.

The Indians tied the game in the third inning when Kingsford's defense sprung a leak. Levi Cunningham singled and Paul Tomaszewski was hit by a pitch. Both scored on errors. Kingsford regained the lead at 3-2 in the bottom of the third as Sexton reached on an error and later scored on a sacrafice bunt from Murdock.

The fourth inning would tell the tale of this one, and Kingsford's shotty defense played a part in what would be a seven-run inning.

Hardwick singled, Weyers walked and Lucas LaCosse reached on a perfectly-placed bunt to load the bases.

Cunningham reached on an error by second baseman Dusty Nevers to score a run and with the bases still loaded, Tomaszewski and Jurek each had base hits to drive in runs.

The score was 5-3 Gladstone when Frazer then reached on another Nevers errror that would have ended the inning.  Stenson made Kingsford pay with a long three-run homer to left field to increase the lead to 8-3.

Pearson singled and later scored on a Weyers hit. and the Indians led, 9-3.

The game was not over, however, as Kingsford battled back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Kyle Sexton singled to lead off the inning, and after consecutive groundouts, it looked as if Gladstone would get out of the inning.

But a Murdock single, an error, and back to back singles by Deyeart and Mike McCole, allowed the Blues to close to within 9-6. In the sixth inning, Gladstone put the game away with two runs as Hardwick walked and LaCosse doubled.

Both scored on wild pitches to make it an 11-6 Gladstone final score.

Cunningham went 5 1/3 innings to get the win on the mound. He was charged with six runs (four earned) on nine hits.  LaCosse went the final 1 2/3 innings, allowing a walk.

Tomaszewski, Hardwick, Weyers and LaCosse all 2 hits each.  Stenson homered and drove in 4 runs. Dayeart had 3 hits to pace Kingsford.

Gladstone (20-2 overall, 11-1 MPL) will host Iron Mountain on Tuesday, and Channing on Wednesday. The games start at 6:30 each night at Don Olsen Field. The Channing game will be broadcast live on WCHT-AM (600) and on www.rrnsports.com.
