Indians Give Up 12 Runs In Fifth, Lose To Ash-Port

KIMBERLY, Wis.---For four innings, the Gladstone Indians were playing pitch-for-pitch with the Ashwaubenon-Bay Port combined team as the KBO Varsity Baseball Tournament got underway at Kimberly's Sunset Park.

Blake Ballard was pitching well, and he was holding down an Ash-Port offense that had rocked the Indians, 11-1, in last week's meeting in Gladstone. But this time, it was a 1-1 game in the fifth inning, and the Indians were the home team with "the hammar".

Indians Manager Jim Groleau asks his son Christian to get an out. It didn't work.
But things went bad quickly for the Indians as Ash-Port erupted for 12 runs and beat the Indians, 13-1. Just like that, a close game became a mercy-killing.

And it happened in an incredible way. Ballard had two outs in the fifth inning, and got a ground ball that looked like it would end the inning.

But there was an error on the play, so the inning continued. And the inning continued. And continued. And continued.

Christaian Groleau and Levi Cunningham eventually replaced Ballard on the mound, but the Ash-Port team had been awoken and one-by-one, their players hit the ball.

The highlight for the Wisconsin squad was a grand-slam home run by Kyle Mrozinski off of Cunningham. And that home run came on an 0-2 pitch.

"In all my years of coaching, I have never seen anything like it," said Ash-Port Coach Dan Lukes, who coached the DePere Legion team for many years before taking over at Ash-Port last year. "To score that many runs with two out and nobody on, it's the darnedst thing I've ever seen."

Gladstone Manager Jim Groleau was left shaking his head. He liked the way Ballard pitched, and the way his team played. Until that fifth inning, when things fell apart.

The Indians managed three hits in the game: two by Cody Frazer and one by Hayden Hardwick.

Gladstone's only run came in the bottom of the first inning, and for a while there, it looked like that run would be enough to keep the team in the game.

But then came that fateful fifth inning, roughly 28 minutes from hell for Gladstone.

The Indians (23-6) return to action Friday afternoon against Neenah (Wis.). Game time is 1:30 ET. We will have a recap of the game here on www.rrnsports.com.
