Bray Home Run, Shutout Lead Esky Past Kingsford
ESCANABA---Casey Bray hit a home run and added a two-run double at the plate, and he came within one out of pitching a no-hitter Monday as Escanaba beat Kingsford, 7-0, to win the championship of the Yooper 9-10 Boys Little League Baseball Tournament. The tournament was started two decades ago by the late District Ten Administrator Karl Dickson, who's name appears on the field located near the Escanaba Civic Center. This year's tournament included eight teams in a single-elimination event. In the fourth inning, Escanaba scored four more runs to take a 7-0 lead. LaMarch singled home a run, Bray drove home two more with a double, and a fourth run scored on a wild pitch. That was more than enough for Escanaba to win its second straight Yooper title. Kingsford's first 12 boys went down in order, before Evan Johnson reached on an error tyo start the fifth inning. Bray was able to get the next three batters in order, and then he struck out the first two batters of the sixth inning. Needing only one more out for a no-hitter, Troy Watt smacked a single to left field to break up the no-no. Bray had 11 strikeouts. On Sunday, the tournament semifinals were held, with Escanaba beating Munising, 16-2, and Kingsford topping Gladstone, 15-3. The 9-10 baseball district tournament begins in a couple of weeks.
