Gladstone Girls Earn Tough Overtime Win In Sault

SAULT STE. MARIE---The Gladstone Braves rallied from ten points down in the second half and posted a 59-54 win over the Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils Saturday afternoon in Sault Ste. Marie.

Gladstone made 25 free throws in the game, including 15 in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter and overtime. The Braves picked up a tough road win after trailing most of the way, and they did it with a strong defense that frustrated the Blue Devils.

Sault Ste. Marie led at halftime, 28-18, before Gladstone Coach Karl Dollhopf made some adjustments. And it worked, as the Soo scored just six points in the third quarter and the Braves closed to within 34-33 heading into the fourth quarter.

Gladstone took its first lead when sophomore Leigha Woelffer nailed a three-pointer with 4:15 left, giving the Braves a 38-36 lead. And it was an intense battle from there.

Ashley Edwardsen sank a pair of free throws with 1:47 left to give the Braves a 42-38 lead, and on the next two possessions, Woelffer made four straight free throws.

Gladstone led, 46-42, with 47 seconds left, and when the Sault's Brenna James missed two free throws, it looked like the Braves were in control. But the Blue Devils battled back with some defense of their own, forcing a turnover with the trap.

And Ann Diepenhorst hit a basket with 20 seconds left to make it a two-point game at 46-44. After a time out, the Blue Devils trapped again, and instead of fouling, Cece Werner got a steal and a driving layup to tie the game with eight seconds left. Gladstone's final possession of the fourth quarter ended with Woelffer missing a three at the buzzer.

In overtime, Woelffer again gave the Braves a spark. She hit a long two-point jumper to make it 48-47, and then after the Blue Devils missed at the other end, Izzy Matthews came through with a clutch shot to make it 50-47.

Diepenhorst scored on the next possession to cut the Braves lead to one with 57 seconds left, but the Braves answered at the free throw line.

Woellfer made a pair with 47 seconds left to make it 52-49, then after the Blue Devils missed, Alexis St. Cyr made a free throw and it was a two-possession game. Bree Swan came back with a three-pointer for the Blue Devils with 18.7 seconds left,  to again cut the gap to one point, but they fouled St. Cyr and she sank two more free throws.

Sault High missed a three-point attempt, but got the ball back on a "jump ball' and Hayley Morley went to the line and made two shots to make it 55-54.

The Braves got the ball into St. Cyr's hands again, and she nailed two more free throws with nine seconds left in overtime to restore the three-point lead. The Blue Devils were preparing for a last-second three-point shot to force another overtime period, but they turned the ball over. Matthews sank two free throws to put the game away.

St. Cyr led the Braves with 26 points and Woelffer contributed 13 points.

Sault High (14-5) had three girls score in double figures: Werner with 16, Diepenhorst with 15, and Swan with 13. They close the season next Thursday against Newberry.

Gladstone (13-4) finish the regular season with a home game Tuesday night against Kingsford, and a road game against Iron Mountain on Thursday. Both games will be broadcast live on WCHT-AM (600), and on-line at www.rrnsports.com.
