Gladstone Girls Beat Negaunee To Improve To 10-3
GLADSTONE---It's not often that a team that's ranked in the top five in the Upper Peninsula wins a game by 49 points and then gets dropped completely out of that poll. That's what happened to the Gladstone High School girls basketball team on Monday, after they beat Rapid River, 61-12, last week in their only game of the week. In what appeared to be a punishment for playing against a Class D Rockets team, the Braves went from third place in the Upper Peninsula rankings to becoming unranked. Houghton (11-2), who Gladstone beat at home on Dec. 27th, 39-36, moved into the fourth spot in the poll. Kingsford (9-3), who Gladstone beat, 49-43, in Kingsford on Dec. 16th, moved into the fifth spot in the U.P. rankings. Gladstone Coach Karl Dollhopf has said for years that polls don't matter. But some Braves fans were talking about it Tuesday as the girls hosted the Negaunee Miners. In what turned out to be a sloppy game at times, the Braves held off the Miners, 43-37, to sweep the season series. Gladstone also beat Negaunee, 54-39, earlier this season. The win improved Gladstone's record to 10-3 on the season, with the only losses coming against top-ranked Marquette (14-0, twice) and Gwinn. Negaunee's record fell to 6-6. Braves sophomore Leigha Woelffer led all scorers with 15 points. Ashley Edwardsen added eight points for Gladstone. The Miners got11 points from Adena Johnson, while Courtney Clickner chipped in seven points. Negaunee led, 10-7, after the first quarter. But the Braves outscored Negaunee, 16-9, in the second quarter, to grab a four-point halftime lead. The game was close all night long. In Tuesday's junior varsity game, Gladstone beat Negaunee, 35-28. Paige Loehr led the Braves with ten points, while Maryssa Simmons led the Miners with seven points. Gladstone will host Menominee in a Great Northern Conference game on Friday. ---Nate Bellville contribued to this report. |
