Three Eskymo Wrestlers Qualify For D-2 Regionals
GAYLORD---Three Escanaba High School wrestlers qualified for next week's regional tournament by finishing in the top four in their weight classes on Saturday at the MHSAA Division Two individual districts in Gaylord. Two wrestlers from Marquette and six from Sault Ste. Marie advanced to the regionals. At 215 pounds, Escanaba's Mohammed Hoque won his third place match over Brent Booth of Midland Dow, 12-3. Sault Ste. Marie's Nathan Lajoie was second in the 215. At 135 pounds, Escanaba freshman Scout Wunder managed to qualify for regionals by finishing fourth. He lost his third place match to Coby Moore of Bay City Western. At 152 pounds, Escanaba sophomore Breyden Papineau also qualified for regionals by taking fourth in his weight class. He lost his third place match to Midland Dow's Austin Reim on a major decision, 13-2. For Marquette, sophomore Beau Caster took fourth at 145 pounds, losing his third place match to Matt Dewyer of Clio on a 9-6 decision. And Marquette's Ricky Baker made it to the 160-pound title match, losing to Cole Reschsteiner of Bay City Western, 6-5. Sault Ste. Marie's regional qualifiers included Chase Bouschor, who won the district championship in the heavyweight division. He beat Gaylord's Tim Roney in overtime, on a 3-2 decision. Sault's David Garee also qualified in that division, finishing fourth. Sault's Adam Lajoie took third (171 pounds), Charles Dunston finished fourth (140 pounds), and Thomas Merchberger (112 pounds) took fourth for the Blue Devils. Escanaba travels to Mt. Pleasant for the Division Two Team Regionals on Wednesday. The Eskymos will face Clio in the semifinals. The three Eskymo wrestlers, along with the Marquette and Sault boys, will go to the Division Two Individual Regionals next Saturday, at Bay City Western.
