Escanaba Wrestlers Rally Past Sault To Win District
MARQUETTE---It came down to the wire, but the Escanaba High School wrestling team rallied to win another MHSAA Division Two district title Wednesday in Marquette. The Eskymos defeated a tough Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils team, 39-36, to earn a trip to the regionals in Bay City. A pin by freshman Scout Wunder tied the match at 30-30, and then, with the Eskymos down by three, it came down to the final match of the evening. Escanaba's Breyden Papineau pinned Sault Ste. Marie's Samantha Smith in just 18 seconds (pictured below), giving the Eskymos six points needed to pull out the victory. Earlier in the evening, Sault Ste. Marie topped Marquette, 40-24, in a semifinal match. Escanaba will take part in the Individual Districts this Saturday in Gaylord, and then will head downstate again next week for the Team Regionals at Bay City Western.
