U.P. Softball Season Ends With Two All-Star Games

ESCANABA---The high school girls softball season wrapped up Wednesday night with the Upper Peninsula Softball All-Star games at Escanaba's Lemmerand Park.

The South team (Escanaba, Gladstone, Rapid River, Norway, Munising, Superior Central, Ironwood) won both games from the North team (Negaunee, Marquette, Ishpeming, Newberry, Sault, Copper Country), 2-1 and 12-9.

The rosters were filled with only seniors, and some U.P. schools chose not to send any girls to the second-year event.

Others, like Ironwood, Superior Central, and Munising, had just one player in attendance. But the girls who were there had a great time.

In the first game, Gladstone all-stater Tinner Sharon picked up where she left off at last weekend's state finals. She did not allow a run, and struck out five of the game's first six outs. Sharon tossed four innings, just a few days after winning the state title.

Negaunee's Roaslie Anderson also threw well for the north squad.

The South took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Gladstone All-Stater Sadie Strasser singled, stole second, and scored on a single by Norway's Rachel Conery.

The North team tied the game in the top of the sixth inning, but in the bottom of the inning, Rapid River's Savannah Stenlund brought home Superior Central's Tesslyn Tinner with the game-winning run on a sacrafice fly.

There was a home run derby held in between games, and Superior Central All-Stater Molly Swajanen was the winner. Gladstone's Jessica Beaudry finished second.

In the second game, the line-ups were switched around to make sure all of the girls got into the action. The South took a 7-3 lead in the fifth inning on an RBI triple by Superior Central's Vaneessa Freberg, plus a couple of run-scoring wild pitches.

Freberg was named the South Team MVP, and Anderson was the North Team MVP.
