THREE-PEAT! Eskymo Girls Roll To District Title

PETOSKEY---The Escanaba High School girls softball team won its third straight district championship on Saturday, beating Kingsford, 7-1, and then topping Cheboygan, 7-2, in the title game.

The wins allow the Eskymos to advance to next Saturday's regionals in Cadillac.

"It's a great feeling," Eskymo Manager John LaMarch said. "Three in a row! The kids are calling it a 'three-peat'. Jayme Frappier is one reason for the success."

"Becca Piron is another one. A lot of good players have come through. Sometimes, we had a little bit of rough luck there (in previous district tournaments), but it comes down to: we have some really good players. That's how you win three in a row."

In the semifinal against Kingsford, Sam Connor's RBI single in the second inning put the Eskymos in front. Syd  Gafner's two-run single in the third inning helped the Eskymos to build a 4-1 lead. Escanaba went on to add three more runs to win, going away.

Cheboygan beat Sault Ste. Marie, 8-3, in the other semifinal. So, that set up a final between the Eskymos and Chiefs, with the winner advancing to the regionals in Cadillac.

Escanaba trailed, 1-0, in the first inning, before getting the upper hand quickly.

Callie Heller and MacKenzie Leisner each walked, and then Piron got a base hit to put the Eskymos in front. An error on that play put the Eskymos in front, and then Jayme Frappier bunted home another run to put Escanaba into a 3-1 lead.

In the fourth inning, Gafner was safe on an error, and JJ Laviolette walked. With two on, Eskymo senior Ashley Cook ripped a triple that scored two runs, and made it 5-1.

Later, Jenn Koish singled, Gafner walked, and Shelby Gregoire got a base hit that scored two runs, giving Escanaba a 7-1 lead.

Frappier earned the pitching win in the opener, while Connor threw 4 1/3 innings to win the second game. Freshman Katie Ross pitched 2 2/3 innings and got a save.

"Katie did a great job for a freshman," LaMarch said.

LaMarch was happy with the play of his sophomore catcherm Piron. He says that Piron threw out Cheboygan's Aspen Williams on two separate occassions during Saturday's game. LaMarch says that Williams will likely be picked this spring as Michigan's Miss Softball, an award given to the state's top girls high school softball player.

Williams will be a scholarship player at Western Michigan University this fall.
