Segorski To Lead Escanaba H.S. Softball Programs

ESCANABA---The Escanaba School Board voted Monday to hire Jamie Segorski as the new Eskymo varsity softball head coach for the 2015 season.

Segorski takes over for John LaMarch, who resigned last month after leading the Eskymos to three straight district championships, and regional titles in 2012 and 2013.

Segorski served as the Eskymos' junior varsity coach the last three seasons.

"It's a great honor," Segorski said Monday night. "It's a big responsibility. I really can't put it into words what it means to me to be able to take over a program that has had so much success in the past."

Segorski has more than two decades worth of softball coaching experience, at the high school, travel, and Little League levels.

His daughter, Taylor, is a member of the Eskymo softball team, and his younger daughter, Carsyn, is a Little Leaguer. Jamie has coached both in All-Star competition this summer.

Segorski's greatest coaching success was in the summer of 2012, when he led the Escanaba Junior Little League All-Stars (age 13-14) to a state championship, a Central Regional championship, and a berth in the Little League World Series in Kirkland, Wash.

This past summer, Segorski's Senior League All-Stars (age 15-16) won district and sectional championships before falling in the state championship game. And Segorski coached the Minor Little League All-Stars (age 9-10) to a spot in the state tournament.

"I think I know every girl in the program at this point," Segorski said. "I think it gives me a little bit of an advantage, at least, a 'comfort advantage'. I'm not coming into a situation where I don't know the players and they don't know what to expect."

Segorski works as a captain at the Escanaba Public Safety Department. He is also the head coach for the Eskymo varsity wrestling team during the winter.

He and LaMarch have at least one thing in common: managing a team at the World Series.

LaMarch did it with the Escanaba Major Girls in 1997 in Portland, Ore. And Segorski did it in 2012 with the Escanaba Junior Girls in Kirkland, Wash.

"There's big shoes to fill now," Segorski said of following LaMarch, who coached the Eskymos for nearly two decades. "John's done great over the past few years, and I've been involved and been able to watch the success of the program."

Segorski says he's already working to set up a coaching staff for the spring.

"The coaches that we have here are just fantastic," he said. "I will have an unbelievable support cast. I certainly recognize that I'm only as good as the people around me."
