Upper Peninsula Track Finals Ends Spring Season

KINGSFORD---The high school track season came to an end on Saturday with the U.P. Finals at Kingsford High School. Kingsford's boys and Marquette's girls won in Division One. Ishpeming's boys and St. Ignace's girls won in Division Two.

Munising's boys and Brimley's girls won in Division Three.

For Delta County's teams, it was a mixed bag.

In Division One, Escanaba's girls finished second behind Marquette with 86 points to 145 for the Redettes. Gladstone's girls were ninth with 25.5 points.

Gladstone's Jamie Snowaert won the pole volt (9 feet 6 inches).

Escanaba won the 400 meter relay in 51.86 seconds (just ahead of Calumet in 51.87).

The Eskymos also won the 800 meter relay in 1:48.42. Escanaba's Brittany Levesque was second in the long jump, and Eskymo Sunny Martineau was second in the 100-meter hurdles. Senior Lynsey Collins was second in the 300 meter hurdles.

And Escanaba's Maddy Willis was second in the 400 meter dash (in 1:02.10).

In the Division One boys meet, Gladstone finished sixth with 39 points, while Escanaba was eighth with 25.

Gladstone's Cody Malanowski won the shot put (49 feet, 1.5 inches) and he was second in the discus (137 feet '08). Chris Sedenquist was second in the 400 (51,74 seconds).

In the Division Three boys meet, Rapid River was third with 60 points, behind Munsing (107) and North Dickinson (68). Big Bay deNoc was eighth, North Central ninth, and Bark River-Harris finished eleventh overall.

Rapid River's Jake Pearson won the discus in 130 feet 10 inches, and Pearson won the shot put in 46 feet, 10 inches. Rockets teammate Hayden Hardwick was second in the shot put, in 45 feet, 11 inches.

Bark River-Harris won the 800-meter relay in 1 minute, 35.74 seconds. Rapid River's Dan Blair finished second in the 1600-meter run (4:46.08), five seconds behind Munising's Brett Hannah. Blair won the 800 run in 2:05.71, with Hannah second.

Big Bay deNoc's Cole Potvin broke a MHSAA U.P. Division Three record in the 400 meter dash, winning in 51.17 seconds. The old record was set in 2005 by Bessemer's Andrew Mettler (51.40). Potvin was second in the 200-meter dash (23.91).

North Central's 1600-meter relay team won the race by nearly two seconds over North Dickinson. NCA's 3200-meter relay team finished second behind Bessemer. 

In the Division Three girls race, Mid Peninsula had the county's highest finish: 12th place. Kelsey Shope won the high jump in 5-feet-1 inch. Shope was second in the 400 meter dash (1:05.61), just under second behind Forest Park's Mary Grandahl.

Carney-Nadeau's Sara Sivula won the long jump in 14-feet.8.25 inches.
