Gladstone Boys, Escanaba Girls Win Track Meets
RAPID RIVER---The Gladstone Braves boys track team won its eleventh straight Delta County Track meet championship on Wednesday, edging the Escanaba Eskymos by eleven points in Rapid River. The host Rockets finished a strong third in the only meet of the year in which every county team competed, regardless of the school's size. In the girls meet, the Escanaba Eskymos dominated, winning nearly every event. Gladstone's Chris Sedenquist won three events to pace the Braves. He took the 200 in 23.97 seconds, the 400 dash in 51.85, the long jump in 19-feet flat, and Sedenquist was part of the winning 800-meter relay team. Gladstone senior Riley Ballard won the 100 dash in 11.73 seconds. Braves teammates also took the next three spots in the 100: Blake Knauf second, Max Mahoney third, and T.J. Vanderlinden was fourth. Ballard also was a part of the winning 400 and 800 meter relay teams, and Ballard was third in the long jump. Escanaba did well in the distance races. In the 3200, Joey Wolfe was the easy winner in 10 minutes, 30.95 seconds. Eskymo teammate Eric Cousineau was second, about twelve seconds behind. The Eskymos also won both the 1600 relay race and the 3200 relay race. And in the 1600 meter run, Escanaba had four of the top five runners. In the field events, Gladstone's Cody Malanowski won both the shot put (48'10) and discus (136'05). Rapid River's Jake Pearson was second in both of those events. Escanaba's Bryan Kwarciany won the pole vault (9'06) and Big Bay deNoc's Cole Potvin won the high jump in six feet, two inches. Potvin also recorded second place finishes in both the 200 and 400 meter races for the Black Bears. Rapid River's Steve Johnson won the 110 hurdles in 17:43, with Rockets teammate Mason Berglund second in 18:41. Escanaba's Brandon Schuenke won the 300 hurdles in 47.35 seconds, with Eskymo teammate Brent Picord finishing second (48.03). BOYS TEAM SCORES: Gladstone 162, Escanaba 151, Rapid River 121, Big Bay deNoc 32, Bark River-Harris 29, Mid Peninsula 16. -----ESCANABA ESKYMOS DOMINATE GIRLS RACE----- Collins was also part of the winning 1600 meter relay team to complete a perfect afternoon. Sunny Martineau won the 100 hurdles (18.60), with Eskymo teammate Erica Baker second. Jayna Lavigne and Lauren Collins finished second and third in the 100 meter dash, and they were both on the 800-meter relay team. Lavigne and Martineau were also part of the winning 400-meter relay team (56.19 seconds). Martineau and LaVigne followed Lynsey Collins in the 300 hurdles with second and third place finishes, as the Eskymos swept all four spots in that event. Escanaba's Maddy Willis won the 400-meter dash in 1:06.29, with teammate Katie Demarse finishing second in 1:07.71. Willis was second in the 200-meter dash. Gladstone was led by Leigha Woelffer in the distance races. She won the 1600 meter race in 4:19.38, winning the race by16 full seconds. In the 3200 race, Woelffer won in 13:02.53, a full 20 seconds clear of Escanaba's Aimee Giese, who took second. Mid Peninsula's girls scored its points by winning three field events. Mid Pen's Brittany Salmi won the pole vault, with a top distance of six feet, six inches. Sarah Hanson won the long jump, with her best jump coming in at 14-feet flat. And Wolverine Kelsey Shope easily won the high jump, with a leap at five feet, two inches. In the shot put, Rapid River's Taylor Hedges was the winner with a throw of 29 feet, six inches. Gladstone's Hailey Bedard was second and Escanaba's Jade Helin was third. In the discus, Helin was the dominant winner, with a toss of 102 feet, six inches.
