HARD-EARNED TROPHY: Kingsford Rallies From The Edge; Wins District

KINGSFORD---The Kingsford High School volleyball team won a district championship Thursday night, but it sure wasn't easy. After a big escape from a deep hole in the semifinals on Wednesday, the Flivvers had to battle the Negaunee Miners into four sets before posting a 3-1 win at the Kingsford High School Gym.

Kingsford won the first two sets, 25-14 and 27-25, before the Miners stayed alive with a 25-21 win in the third set. The Flivvers clinched the win in another tight battle in the fourth set, 25-23. Other than the first set, the match was tightly contested all night, with a large Flivver crowd dressed in white cheering every Kingsford point.

It was a whirlwind 24 hours for the Flivvers, after their fantastic season nearly came to an end in Wednesday night's semifinal. The upset-minded Houghton Gremlins won the first two sets, 25-16 and 25-19, before Kingsford got the wake-up call. The Flivvers won the third set, 25-20, then dominated the fourth and fifth sets, 25-9 and 15-8.

So, the Flivvers, with a 22-2-0 season record, move on to the regional semifinals, to take on the West Branch Ogemaw Heights Falcons (28-6-2) Tuesday night in Newberry.

Negaunee finished its season with a 19-10-4 record.
