Gladstone Junior Indians Slip Past Escanaba, 6-4

GLADSTONE---
The Gladstone Junior Indians opened the summer season Friday night with a 6-4 win over the Escanaba Junior Cubs in a back-and-forth game at Don Olsen Field.

The Indians broke a 4-4 tie with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to earn the win.

The Indians took the early 2-0 lead on RBI singles by Zay Lepzing and Trevor Thorbahn in the second inning.

Escanaba, however, rallied in the second inning to score three runs. Ashton Rymkos singled with the bases loaded to put the J-Cubs on the board, and then Alex Ison's base hit to center field scored two runs, making it a 3-2 game.

In the bottom of the inning, Charles Salo drew a walk from Escanaba pitcher Joey Garcia. Cooper Sanville followed with a triple to tie the game at 3-3. Sanville scored on a wild pitch, and that gave Gladstone a 4-3 lead after two innings.

The scoring slowed down from there. Cannon Arnt singled home Owen Fields with the tying run for Escanaba in the top of the third inning to make it 4-4, and it stayed that way until the bottom of the fifth inning.

Sanville smacked his second triple of the game with one out in the inning, and an error brought in the go-ahead run. Isaac Ketchum and Thorbahn both got base hits to load the bases, and Braylon Robinson drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home the Indians' sixth run.

The J-Cubs turned a 6-3-2 double play to end the inning when Ketchum tried to score on a Jaykob Dahm ground ball.

Thorbahn,who came on to pitch the fifth inning, and he retired all six batters he faced, including four strikeouts in the final two innings of the game. He earned the win in relief of Gavin Frossard, who threw the first four innings and allowed four runs on seven hits.

Garcia pitched the whole way for Escanaba, and took the loss, allowing six runs on seven hits.
